An official, internationally recognised certificate that measures your German language level is an important asset for your CV that potential employers are sure to appreciate. Which certificate is the right choice for you?

The Goethe Institute issues official and internationally recognised German certificates. The Institute offers several diplomas, ranging from ZD (Zertifikat Deutsch) to GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom), a very advanced level diploma. All these diplomas correspond to the different levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The Goethe Institute is a member of Alte (Association of Language Testers in Europe).

ZD (Zertifikat Deutsch)
Upper elementary level certificate. [B1 according to the CEFR]
A minimum of 400-600 lessons is required to reach this level. >>> Details

ZDfB (Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf)
Certificate in professional German that recognises an intermediate language level [B2 according to the CEFR]. >>> Details

ZMP (Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung)
This exam certifies an upper intermediate language level. [C1 according to the CEFR]
A minimum of 800 to 1000 lessons is required to reach this level. >>> Details

ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung)
Recognises an advanced language level [C2 according to the CEFR] sufficient for pursuing studies in a German high school. (more than 1,200 lessons). >>> Details

KDS (Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
Equivalent to the ZOP in level, the KDS demands greater literary knowledge. This exam recognises a high standard in German literature and also allows successful candidates to teach German as a foreign language. >>> Details

GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
The GDS diploma (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom) is the Goethe Institute’s highest-level exam and recognises a level of German close to native-speakers. >>> Details
