The political and economic capital of Cuba, Havana is also the cultural centre of the island and, by extension, of all of the Caribbean. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has been the birthplace of music and dance styles that have influenced the entire new continent, spreading a contagious “joie de vivre” across the world. Havana has shaped a new and multicultural identity for itself. It is not rare to come across a Santeria ceremony in the streets of La Habana Vieja, where the Bata drums beat out hymns of praise to the Christian saints, whilst candles are lit for an African deity of the Yoruba Pantheon. More down-to-earth, it is this same fusion of cultures that is the source of the rumba and the salsa, which will have even the shyest visitor swinging his or her hips in the numerous clubs of the city.
