Manchester’s good fortune began during the 18th century with the rapid development of industry, where it had been the “world capital of cotton”, as well as of trousers and denim for two centuries. Names like Bobby Charlton, Eric Cantona and David Beckham mean that today, Liverpool’s long-time rival owes its fame to a legendary football club that trains in the no less famous Old Trafford Stadium; if you are a football fan, you will love this place. The atmosphere is guaranteed as far as inside the pubs! But that is not all Manchester has to offer. As the administrative centre for the north of England and the second financial centre after London, Manchester will surprise you, especially with its cultural offer: numerous museums, art galleries, concert halls, scientific institutes and its university (to which the Jodrell Bank Observatory is attached), make it a city that students really appreciate: youthful, open, beautiful and, being a capital of fabrics, great for clothes shopping! For those keen on history, the city can be explored in terms of its Roman or medieval pasts, and discovered according to the major role it played in the Industrial Revolution. A robust city, Manchester has always known how to bounce back to become a place which has nothing to envy of Europe’s large cities.
